Leaders, Backing, and Tippets Leaders, backing, and tippets are three important components of a game fishing rig.Leaders: Leaders are the section of line that connects the main line to the fly or lure. Leaders, backing, and tippets should be matched to the size and species of fish that you are targeting. For example, if you are targeting large tuna, you will need a heavier leader and tippet than if you are targeting smaller fish such as trout.
